Baxter: Vendors responsible for slow cloud Business Intelligence adoption
Cloud-based Business Intelligence (BI) is facing a curious predicament. Market research indicates a willingness to move to cloud-based methods of BI deployment, with MarketsandMarkets predicting the global cloud analytics market to grow from $5.25 billion at the end of 2013 to $16.52 billion by 2018.
Research also points towards the potential for enhanced benefits, citing improved scalability and flexibility, faster and more seamless deployment, lower operating costs and total cost of ownership, more efficient use of IT resources, reduced delays for business user information access and easier connection to cloud-based data sources. In fact, analyst firm Nucleus Research recently delivered a report that suggested the unique benefits of Cloud BI could deliver 1.7 times the ROI of on-premise implementations.
Sounds great, right? But, it’s a fact that there is a comparatively small number of cloud-based BI use cases out there in the market today. So, if the desire for adoption exists, and the documented benefits are available, what’s holding up the show?
In a recent interview with contributing editor of Cloud Computing Intelligence, Graham Jarvis, Managing Director for EMEA at Yellowfin, Peter Baxter, said that organizations were hesitant to take the plunge because BI vendors weren’t meeting their needs.
“If we look at how the cloud has revolutionized some core areas, there has been a relatively slow uptake of [cloud-based business intelligence and analytics tools] as people have wanted someone else to be the guinea pig,” said Baxter. “BI providers need to work harder to address customers’ concerns relating to security and scalability. Many BI products haven’t offered the security features to instill the confidence needed to consider enterprise-wide cloud-based BI – think data partitioning, multi-tenant capability, as well as role and data level security.”
