Macquarie Uni?s Yellowfin project wins 2011 People?s Choice Award

Australian Higher Education provider, Macquarie University (MQ), a client of international Business Intelligence (BI) vendor, Yellowfin, has won the People’s Choice Award at the inaugural 2011 Excellence in Business Intelligence Awards.

Award winners were announced from a shortlist of six finalists at the Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing 2.0 Conference, 26 October 2011, Sydney, Australia.

The winner of the People’s Choice Award was chosen by conference attendees, which included a raft of industry leaders, veterans and experts, who nominated the case study they found most inspiring.

The awards, coordinated by The Australian Business Intelligence Leadership Forum (ABILF), were open to any organization or vendor that delivered or participated in the delivery of a BI project within Australia since 1 July 2010.

MQ applied for the award after launching its self-service reporting and analytics program in May this year. The program, branded as Datamart, is powered by Yellowfin’s BI solution.

“We’re really pleased with this result,” said Macquarie Chief Information Officer, Marc Bailey. “We think Macquarie University secured the People’s Choice Award because we’re doing something genuinely unique and engaging with how our people go shopping for data.

“Our strategy is dead simple: whatever the question, the answer we want to be able to give our students and staff is ‘there’s a link for that’. In only its first year Datamart has become the single most trusted and recognized authoritative source of links to pan-university intelligence.

“We are empowering a tremendous range of university staff with self-service reporting and analytics, and taking advantage of market-leading spatial, collaborative and mobile components of Yellowfin in Datamart.

“Yellowfin delivers visibility of critical data sets for government reporting and the people at Macquarie with the information they need to offer the best services possible and develop winning research, teaching and business strategies,” Bailey concluded.

Yellowfin CEO, Glen Rabie, said that the win was reflective of both Yellowfin’s and Macquarie’s human-oriented approach to BI.

“I think winning the People’s Choice Award is very apt,” said Rabie. “BI Implementations like Macquarie’s Datamart project are driving the trend towards the consumerization of BI and greater analytics ROI.

“Macquarie is utilizing reporting and analytics to create considerable competitive advantage in the Higher Education market. They’re achieving this through pervasive, consumer-oriented BI. They’re empowering more people with the ability to make better, faster, fact-based decisions.”

Yellowfin is currently deployed to 240 staff throughout Macquarie, is progressively rolling-out to a wider population of 1200 staff, and will eventually offer students access to a wide range of operational university data, subject to security.
