Pervasive Business Intelligence ?good for business?: TDWI

It’s now utterly undeniable – the consumerization of Business Intelligence (BI), the widespread deployments and high levels of user adoption that follow, have considerable positive business impacts.

Yet more independent industry research, this time from The Data Warehousing Institute (TDWI), suggests that the trend towards pervasive BI deployments – BI projects and technology that target the report consumer – is “good for your business”.

In a 2010 Webinar – How Pervasive BI is Good for Your Business and How to Get There – Director of TDWI Research, Wayne Eckerson, stated that whilst the percentage of active BI users is abysmally low (24 percent in 2009), the number of active users is one of the best performance indicators for any BI implementation. The presentation concludes by suggesting that BI adoption and usage rates remain low because most BI products are still geared towards analysts and power users.

TDWI Best Practices Report – Pervasive BI: Techniques and Technologies to Deploy BI on an Enterprise Scale – indicated that the majority of active BI users (61 percent) are power users or analysts. Unsurprisingly, time-to-deploy, and complexity of BI tools, were listed by survey participants as the major barriers to adoption (42 percent).

The report states, via the responses of its 675 respondents, that the three key technical capabilities most likely/able to boost and accelerate BI usage figures within the enterprise are:
