The report compared the world’s leading BI solutions, assessing product usability and functionality – the two factors that Nucleus Research has found indicate an applications’ ability to deliver initial Return on Investment (ROI) and maximum value over time.

“To help users navigate the system, Yellowfin has continued to invest in its Web-based user interface, which drives an accelerated time to value and a higher adoption rate,” stated the report. “Yellowfin’s user interface and presentation layer are simple and intuitive, allowing it to have broad appeal.

“Yellowfin offers a Collaborative BI platform, in-application BI presentation module, data visualization, proactive alerts and decision-making capabilities that support an extensive list of functionality.”

Report author and Principal Analyst for BI and analytics at Nucleus Research, Anne Moxie, said that Yellowfin’s breadth of intuitive functionality extended beyond the end-user, offering IT the governance features to support pervasive BI deployments.

“Yellowfin offers administrative, governance, and advanced data analysis and exploration capabilities for enterprise-wide deployment and management,” said Moxie. “Yellowfin delivers a BI platform that supports all major user types: IT have the governance features required to deliver a single source of truth throughout the enterprise; Data Discovery and data visualization capabilities enable business analysts to explore and create actionable insights; while interactive dashboards and a unique approach to Collaborative BI empower business users to share knowledge and make collective decisions quickly.”

The report also credited Yellowfin’s approach to Mobile BI – the ability to create BI content once and instantly consume it on any device or platform – for “encouraging a higher rate of productivity.” Yellowfin’s Location Intelligence capabilities – particularly the ability to rapidly add demographic data to existing data sets for free via the Yellowfin Marketplace – were also highlighted as a key differentiator.

Yellowfin CEO and Co-Founder, Glen Rabie, said that Yellowfin’s positioning as a Leader in Nucleus Research’s latest Value Matrix for BI was reflective of the vendor’s ability to satisfy broad analytic use cases.

“At Yellowfin, we don’t think it makes sense to have one tool for reporting and another for Data Discovery – that’s why we offer a single-integrated Business Intelligence platform to satisfy a range of reporting and analytics needs,” said Rabie. “Yellowfin enables large, scalable business-user-oriented deployments by delivering a complete platform. As a 100 percent browser-based BI solution, Yellowfin can seamlessly scale to meet growing end-user demand, simultaneously support the governance requirements of IT, and facilitate the data exploration and content creation needs of business analysts.”

Within its Value Matrix reports, Nucleus Research projects trends for each vendor. The current matrix shows upward momentum with Yellowfin poised to move further into the Leader quadrant – up, and to the right – in the next version of the report (Second Half 2015), due out in November 2015.

The Nucleus Research Value Matrix is split into four quadrants: Leaders, Experts, Facilitators and Core Providers. Yellowfin was placed in the Leaders quadrant, with the report stating that “Vendors in the Leaders quadrant have invested in both functionality and usability features that are likely to deliver the greatest potential returns.”

The report continued: “With high functionality and usability scores, these vendors are recognized for relatively advanced capabilities across all core application areas… and other factors that contribute to quicker deployment and user adoption. Leaders are continually developing and investing in new functionalities to respond to market and user expectations.”

About Nucleus Research’s Technology Value Matrix

The Technology Value Matrix is based on the two core criteria of usability and functionality – the two factors that Nucleus Research has found indicate an applications’ ability to deliver initial ROI and maximum value over time.

The ‘usability’ aspect of the matrix is scored on the intuitiveness of the application, availability of role-based interfaces, training requirements, and productivity impact on users. The ‘functionality’ component is based on scores relating to the breadth and depth of functionality in the core application, the availability and ease of integration of add-on functionality that delivers additional benefit, and vendors’ investment in innovative functionality outside the core application that delivers additional benefits.

Nucleus Research developed its Value Matrix series of reports to complement the Gartner Magic Quadrant because “during the past five years in particular, the buying process and mix of vendors have changed. The Value Matrix takes account of this ongoing change and highlights vendors whose solutions remain dynamic.” The Value Matrix differs from Gartner’s Magic Quadrant because it provides a relative ranking against competitors rather than an absolute ranking.
