Semicolon as CSV separator?

Hello,

we would like to use a CSV-export as a workaround for the missing XLSX-export.

In order to make it easier to import the CSV-file into Excel, we would like to have a semicolon instead of the comma as a separator.

Is there a way to achieve that somehow? If not, could we raise an enhancement request to add an option to select a separator when exporting to CSV?

Many thanks,
Ingo
Hi Ingo,

A support task has been raised for this (TASK ID = 122682) which is hopefully going to be implemented in a future release. I know it has been discussed but just no ETA as yet.

Sorry for the bad news.

Regards,
David
Hi David,

Is there an ETA for the configurable seperator by now?

Best regards,
Ingo
Hi Ingo,

good news, this has already been implemented with the release of Yellowfin 7.1 last month. Here is the wiki page describing how to change the field separator, it is in point 3.

regards,
Dave
Hi David,

Thanks for the link. But that is the CSV-IMPORT. I was talking about the CSV-EXPORT. Is the support of different seperators implemented or planned to be implemented, too? From this screenshot of a 7.1 installation it does not look like.

Hi Ingo,

apologies for misinterpreting your request! You're probably wondering why I informed you of CSV import when you were talking about CSV export, well, please try and understand that as support staff we are constantly re-interpreting, respelling, making assumptions about what users write (or don't write), and in this case I got it wrong!

I checked the status of the support task 122682 and it hasn't been looked at yet and it isn't on the immediate implementation road-map.

Dave
Hi Dave,

I totally understand the confusion and the reasons that happens. I did not mean to sound rude, I just wanted to help to make it clear that I was referring to a different issue. My appologies, if I offended you in any way. Maybe something got lost in translation, too, after all not everybody is a native english speaker.

I know you guys are busy and probably juggling many requests at the same time.

Thank you for getting me the actaul status.

Best regards,
Ingo

Hi Ingo,

Don't worry Dave was not offended, it's always hard to interpret text and understand if the person is happy or annoyed. I guess :) or :( can be used ;).

We have discussed your task, and just trying to understand why you were after this feature.
Reason being, we export to a CSV (comma separated value) as normal. Changing the delimiter from comma to semicolon no longer makes it a CSV file, I guess it would be a SCSV file.

Are you trying to open this CSV in a text editor?
If that is the case you should be able to use a 'find and replace' option where you can swap the , for a ; . Or Excel may even have a way to export and change the delimiter.

Once we can understand why you're trying to achieve this, we can work out if it's something that will ever be possible to do in YF.

Thanks,
David :)

Hi David, in many countries the csv is separated by semicolon because our decimal separator is comma ex: 1.000,00 and also there are descriptions with comma in the texts. When we used comma is necessary a lot of work to correct the csv because the comma in the numbers and texts can divide the fields in a wrong way. Other tools has this option to use semicolon and I also think that is very important and easy to develop this option. Sorry for my comments, but it is also very important to us.
kind regards,
Arthur
Hi Arthur,

No need to apologise.
Thanks for the extra info.

David

Hi David,

Arthur is right, here CSV is usually interpreted as character separated, since the comma is used in the number formats and the semicolon is most common as a seperator.

Excel also uses that as the default separator, at least on German Windows installation and therefore the import into Excel for additional analysis is streamlined.

Ingo
